Sustainability

The relationship between food and sustainability means that food-processing generally relies on renewable resources. How raw materials are produced is mirrored in the final product. The quality of all resources can be measured with modern methods, ensuring constant quality of resources for food producers and helping in consumer protection.

Quality of raw materials aside, the food industry has a special responsiblity for employing environmentally friendly production methods and a logistical chain that is ecologically sustainable. Environmental responsibility within the production process is as important as the economic challenges when producing high-quality food at affordable prices. 

Below, the actions of Hela Gewürzwerk Hermann Laue are explained. Success is ensured by 20 employees working in development and in the quality assurance lab. At Hela, sustainabilty has four dimensions:

• Food-producing companies are responsible for consumer protection. Consumer protection includes quality and risk avoidance from raw materials to the final product as well as nutrition physiology.

• Environmental responsibility ranges from sourcing and controlling raw materials to an environmentally friendly supply chain and ecologically responsible processing of products.

• Economic responsibility is necessary for the company’s existence, restricted by health regulations and environmental responsibility. Obviously, these three dimensions are all interrelated.

• Societal responsibility as the fourth dimension correlates with economic responsibility within the restrictions laid out in the first two dimensions. Societal responsibility also includes training and education, employment and further civil commitments.
